Recently in the Metropolitan Pavilion in lower midtown, I was able to attend the semi-annual Manhattan Vintage Show. The show is a two- day experience where one can shop from various vintage dealers and explore the styles of the past century up close. There were over ninety different dealers, such as local NY-based shops like Rue St Denis and New York Vintage, as well as boutiques from all over the country.
One of the highlights of the vintage show is the people watching. I got to see an array of eclectic styles on the crowd of vintage devotees walking the floor, not just hanging on the racks.
It was like paradise to see so many people dressed in gorgeous, loud and extravagant clothes compared to the streets outside, where conservative and uniform style reign. Ladies in proper 1950’s glamour-looks were found shopping next to drag queens, celebrities (Misfit Dior & Debi Mazer!) and fans of obscure bondage- meets -bohemian style. It was definitely a place to both see and be seen, while browsing for a unique find.
While talking with Ken Weber of Vintage Martini from Texas(they have been trekking to this show since its early days), I learned that the show used to be about a one-third of the size! It has since grown and gained a lot of attention in the industry and beyond. As we were chatting, fashion VIPs, Lynn Yaeger and Hamish Bowles appeared to browse in their booth, emphasizing his point.
Overall, to me the show was amazing in its ability to bring la crème de la crème of vintage fashion together, under one roof.
The next shows are coming right up! If vintage is what you crave, there is no place more perfect. I would highly suggest going to both shows if you are in the area.
See you there!
